Sawsan is a Syrian architect and urban development practitioner tackling the impact of urban processes and reconstruction efforts on social justice, social cohesion, and good governance. She has recently co-initiated a programme called SAKAN, aimed at developing affordable housing projects to aid recovery in Syria. She works as the Syria project coordinator with Internews on supporting Syria’s civil society groups in their communication for resilience and advocacy. She works closely with the UK All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPG) friends of Syria in supporting their advocacy efforts within the Parliament and elsewhere. She is also a co- founder of Hooz; a Syrian community-based organisation working on promoting social cohesion, accountability and good governance inside Syria. She participated in different panels and round tables in the UK and in Europe, including in the House of Lords, Chatham House, LSE, UCL, SOAS, and the European Institute of Peace, mostly speaking about the role of civil society and community-based initiatives in responding to the current situation in Syria.
