Summer Internships at Beyond Borders Scotland
Events, Communications, and Marketing Internships
Beyond Borders offers a number of 3-to-4-month long internships throughout the summer, during which time interns will work closely with the whole team in the planning and delivery of project activities and the annual Beyond Borders International Festival, which will be taking place on August 27th and 28th at Traquair House in the Scottish Borders.
Our internships are designed so that the whole team works collaboratively in the delivery of the Festival, and we envisage that internships will be designed and adapted to suit the individual skills and experience of successful applicants. The below is an indication of the type of work and activities involved in the delivery of the Festival:
Events Organisation
- Support in planning and delivery of the Beyond Borders International Festival, including:
- Logistical support
- Development of plans for visual arts exhibitions; performing arts events; and film screenings
- Programming assistance and participant liaison
- Assistance with planning of cultural events including exhibition launches and stand-alone events;
- General events organisation support.
Marketing & Communications
- Support in planning and delivery of the Beyond Borders International Festival;
- Management of social media channels and development of social media strategy;
- Assistance with outreach and promotion strategies including advertising and press coverage;
- Support maintenance of the Festival website;
- Support for video and audio production for outreach purposes and during the Festival.
Who Are We Looking For?
We are a small and close-knit team, so an ability to work equally well independently and within a team is key, as is enthusiasm and a can-do attitude! In addition, we are looking for applicants who:
- Are highly organised and detail-orientated
- Have strong written and verbal communications skills
- Have excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Have experience working in an office environment, both within a team and unsupervised
- Demonstrate an interest in areas such as events organisation, marketing and promotion, cultural events, international affairs, politics, law and human rights
- Are a graduate or final year student in an arts, humanities, legal, or political science related subject
Relevant previous work experience is advantageous, though not mandatory.
Other Information:
Closing Date: Thursday April 14th, 5pm GMT.
Our internships are part time, with an expectation that interns work at least two days per week. All team members are expected to be available in person from Thursday 25th – Monday 29th August 2022.
Start Date: As soon as possible, ideally from mid-May onwards.
Working pattern: Beyond Borders usual working hours are 0930 – 1730, Monday – Friday. Some work outside of these hours may be required depending on events taking place.
Location: Edinburgh-based office (with provision for hybrid-working). The Beyond Borders International Festival takes place at Traquair House, Innerleithen EH44 6PW – accommodation is provided from Thursday 25th – Monday 29th August.
Stipend: Consistent with National Minimum Wage, paid monthly.

Volunteering at the Beyond Borders International Festival
We are always looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to help at the Beyond Borders International Festival! This year’s event is taking place on August 27th and 28th at Traquair House in the Scottish Borders and features a weekend of panel discussions and debates, music and theatrical performance, visual arts exhibitions, and film with authors, politicians, diplomats, and performers from all over the world.
Festival Volunteers are involved with all aspects of the event, including:
- Box Office and Front of House
- General assistance with event set-up and strike
- Support of events management in our Festival marquees and performance and exhibition spaces
- Support in our Festival Green Room
Our volunteers often come back again and again, and some have gone on to carry out internships with us in later years. Please note that these are voluntary positions, but accommodation, local transport, and food are all provided. We ask that our volunteers be available from Thursday 25th – Monday 29th August to assist with set-up and strike.
