Beyond Borders Scotland works through various mediums – dialogue, literature, heritage, film, visual and performing arts – as well as in a cross sector environment, politics, diplomacy, law and cultural exchange to facilitate impactful international cultural dialogue and build fruitful partnerships. Drawing on our rich network of partners, patrons, seasoned statesmen and women and experts from a multi-sector background we aim to fosters and promote greater understanding between nations and cultures.
As a creative hub for cultural and arts festivals, literature and politics, we believe Scotland has a unique contribution to make in cultural dialogue and cultural diplomacy more broadly, and use our home in the Scottish Borders as a retreat, hub and safe-space across all our projects and events. Beyond Borders follows key principles of cultural relations promoting greater understanding and conflict resolution, through respect and recognition of cultural diversity and heritage; intercultural dialogue; justice, equality and interdependence of and for people; the protection of international human rights and with a belief in global peace and stability. These principles underscore our art and cultural programmes, dialogue initiatives and events, and all serve our overarching goals of conflict transformation, rule of law and peacebuilding.
Art and culture are powerful tools to guide and enable social change and conflict transformation. They have the potential to build bridges, transform relationships, empower communities and build the capacity of change makers around the world. We have undertaken a number of initiatives, events and projects in support of cultural dialogue over the years. It is one of the founding principles and aims of the Beyond Borders International Festival, and our Summer Cultural Programme more broadly. A longstanding focus of Beyond Borders is to engage in cultural dialogue through performing and visual arts. Beyond Borders Performing Arts gives the stage to theatre and visual arts companies from around the world engaged in works of international interest. We believe that by providing a space for, and impact from, artistic and cultural collaborations around contentious and pressing global issues, greater understanding and cultural reconciliation can be built.

Cultural Dialogue in Action: Manal Al Dowayan, I AM
On the 17-18 December 2012, Beyond Borders collaborated with Club de Madrid and Delfina Foundation to bring Saudi Arabian artist – Manal Al Dowayan – and her work to the Club’s Annual Conference, held in Little Rock, Arkansas, on the topic of ‘Harnessing 21st Century Solutions: A Focus on Women’. Manal exhibited her photography exhibition I AM, which addresses the question ‘what job suits my role as a woman?’ at the Clinton Presidential Library, and Manal herself took part in a panel discussion with Geena Davis. Beyond Borders Executive Director Mark Muller Stuart QC was Master of Ceremonies for President Bill Clinton’s inaugural session, which opened the conference. The British Council Scotland was also a valued partner in this effort. Manal and her photographic exhibition then travelled to Scotland to exhibit at the Beyond Borders International Festival of Literature & Thought 2013 at Traquair House.
